Australia, Fiji and New Zealand won all their games on day one of the LA Sevens 2020 while the Blitzboks also finished unbeaten to top their group thanks to wins over Canada and Kenya and a thrilling 19-19 draw with Ireland in the last game of the pool.
South Africa will face USA in the final quarterfinal scheduled for Sunday.
Fiji will play England, Australia take on Ireland and New Zealand and France will slog it out in the other quarterfinals.
South Africa are in second spot on the World Series Sevens standings, sitting on 67 points. New Zealand top the log on 76. France (56 points), England (54 points) and Fiji (53 points) complete the top five in what is turning out to be a congested log. USA sit in sixth currently on 47 points.
The Blitzboks have won the opening series in Dubai, then finished second in Cape Town. They suffered a blip in Hamilton, but came back with a bang in Sydney, finished second again, losing to Fiji in the final. They last won the American leg of the tournament in 2017.
The tournament was still hosted in Las Vegas that year with the move back to Los Angeles only coming this year. LA last hosted a World Series event in 2006. South Africa finished third on that occasion. England won the event and Fiji, who went on to be crowned overall champions in that season, finished second.
