The Blitzboks will play the United States in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Canada Sevens on Sunday. Kick off is at 20:19 South African time.
South Africa topped their Pool at the Vancouver event with wins over Japan, Argentina and England. The Blitzboks are brimming with confidence after a storming comeback in Los Angeles last weekend, where they came from behind to upset Fiji in the final.
They have a solid record over the USA, having won 16 of the 19 meetings between the two sides. The USA have blown hot and cold this season so far, with their best result being the bronze medal in Sydney. They’ve won 16 of their 26 games this season.
Heading into the clash, South Africa are very much favourites and have the far superior record this season. But Sevens is a funny game and as two of the other quarterfinalists – Canada and Spain – have proven, anything can happen.
New Zealand and Fiji will square off in the second quarterfinal on Sunday. The All Blacks are the series leaders with Olympic champions, Fiji, having had a somewhat disappointing season by their standards.
England and Australia will slog it out in the other fixture, with the Aussies one of the form teams. England suffered a shock loss to Spain last weekend and were thrashed by South Africa in the pool stages.
