Al Masry president Samir Halabia believes that Al Ahly should be crowned Egyptian Premier League champions.
The Red Devils are sitting pretty at the top of the league standings – 16 points above their closest rivals having remarkably recorded 16 wins out of 17 games
However, the football matches in the country have been suspended for two weeks as part of the measures to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus in the North African country.
Harabia says the league should be declared null and void as Covid-19 will soon affect football clubs.
“We have one week until all sports activities return normally, then we’ll wait one week for the league to start on April 5 and 6. But then, one case of corona will be discovered at one of the clubs and it will be suspended for another 15 days,” Halabia told Zamalek TV.
“I think Al Ahly should be crowned champions and then we would start properly preparing for the new season, there are many things that need to be changed and fixed.
“People are saying that we’re demanding the cancellation of the league because we’re 10th on the table even though we were in the same position last season and managed to finish fourth. The same thing happened the season before and we were among the top three,” he added.
“We need to all agree that there is an issue and we need to use this time to try and put things back in place.
“80-90% of the players are from Upper Egypt, do we know their lifestyle? Does anyone know when the coronavirus outbreak will end? One’s health is much more important than sports,” he concluded.
Al Ahly are left with 17 league matches and they can still be caught if the league season resumes provided they also drop points.
