Sims 4 expansion leak ‘Murder at the Manor’ is fake

Another day, another leak. This time it's for a new Sims 4 expansion pack... and it's a little bit less convincing than previous leaks on official channels.

H/T @SimmerErin for her video that alerted us to this ‘leak’. If you haven’t yet, check out her channel – she’s amazing.

UPDATE on 16 September 2020: Since this was written, it’s been revealed that this was all a hoax. A pretty good one, we’ll admit. But a hoax nonetheless.

Oh boy. Here we go again. The new Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu pack was not even officially released yet and there has already been another leak for a new Sims 4 expansion.

Sims 4 Murder Mystery Leak

Unlike the icon leak for the Star Wars game pack, which happened on the official Sims website, and the more recent stuff pack leak on Origin, this one has not come through any official channels

Sims 4 new expansion pack leak: Murder at the Manor

In a video shared to Twitter, a user shows a recorded video from an official game retailer, game.co.uk, with a new Sims 4 expansion pack listed for pre-order.

Leaks from retailers are not unusual. Both the Sims 4 Island Living and Discover University expansion packs leaked through retailers prior to their release.

The leak has been removed from the website since it was first posted and when trying to access the URL visible in the recorded screen, we get a 404.

Fake leaks are not unusual either, though, and there have been a few those in recent months, too. But let’s look at the leak for the new Sims 4 expansion pack in a bit more detail – and you can make up your own mind.

The Sims 4 team did recently confirm that they will announce the game’s next expansion pack in “just a matter of weeks”, but did not share much detail about what the theme might be.

Sims 4 Murder at the Manor expansion pack description

The pack is set to be released on 13 November 2020, according to the “leak” on the site. That would fit the usual release pattern of expansion packs, but some other details are a bit iffy.

The description that appears in the new leak reads as follows:”A delightful dinner party at the Mayor’s house took a frightful twist when his murder plunged the evening into utter chaos.

Venture to the sleepy countryside village of Worcesterbury and uncover what skeletons hide in the Worcester family closet to reveal who is behind the murder of the Mayor in the Sims 4 Murder at the Manor Expansion Pack. Enlist the help of a private investigator Prunella P. Plumbobs and sleuth the grounds of the Worcesterbury Estate to gather evidence in piecing together the puzzle of this thrilling murder mystery!

In a race against time, rifle through drawers and search under furniture to track down the murder weapons and interrogate the guests and house staff to assess their alibis. But beware! As the night unravels, more and more Sims are in danger of becoming the killer’s next victims, and you never know who, when, or where they’ll strike next.

Hrm. You can see the potential problems with this sort of pack right off the bat. Would The Sims 4 really release a pack that actively encourages “murder” – whatever approach that might take?

Sure, there is death, oh so much death, in The Sims 4, but an entire pack that pretty much centres around Sims doing that to each other. We’re not so sure.

Additionally, there have been quite a few of these ‘concepts’ by Sims players around a murder mystery pack for The Sims 4 over the years. These are usually quite substantial and fleshed out, but they are only fan concepts. As Simmer Erin pointed out in her video, there was an eerily similar concept shared on Reddit a few years ago.

We certainly do not think that the pack is beyond the realms of possibility. But we are not quite convinced that the description and game play features mentioned fits the Sims 4 style.

And yes, we know that this is not something players asked for. But Simmers did not ask for the Star Wars pack either.
