Grim Fandango is being released on Xbox

The remastered version of the cult classic, Grim Fandango, will be released on Xbox in October.

One of the finest adventure games ever produced, Grim Fandango, will be released on Xbox Game Pass just in time for Halloween and the Day of the Dead – the Mexican holiday that served as much of the game’s inspiration.

Double Fine Productions’ remasters of three classic Lucas Arts adventure games — Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle – will all be released on Xbox Game Pass on 29 October 2020.

The three games, including Grim Fandango, will also be released as a standalone for Xbox – priced at US$14,99 each while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribes will have access to the games on Windows 10 PC, and Xbox One.

Grim Fandango Remastered was released in 2015 it added improved character graphics, controls (including point and click), an orchestrated score, and directors’ commentary.

The original title gained a cult following in the 1990s, following the adventures of  Manny Calavera, a travel agent who helps souls make their journey to the Land of Rest.

Modern gamers, who have not played Grim Fandango before, might struggle somewhat with the style of gameplay. While it is an adventure game at its core, gameplay relies heavily on puzzle solving and interactions.

There’s no way for the character to die and there is no way to ‘lose’ the game – even if completion might be somewhat challenging without resorting to guided walkthroughs.

The so-called adventure genre games became much less popular after Grim Fandango’s release, but for players who played and lived through its peak, this weird, wonderful and quirky game will always have a special place in our palms.
