The Sims 4 confirmed that the next game pack will be a collaboration with Star Wars. Officially titled Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu, the game pack’s announcement has not been well-received by Sims players. The official trailer for the new Sims 4 game pack had far more dislikes than likes. It’s tough.
While it is quite obvious from the trailer that there has been a real love and thought put into the world that will come with this pack, we don’t know all that much about what exactly the pack will offer.
Nobody doubts that the Sim Gurus love the franchise and are passionate about The Sims, but many players say they feel increasingly ignored – and the initial reactions to this pack is a strong indication of that.
The initial description read like the world will be a vacation world, where Sims go on quests of sorts.
But even long before the new Sims 4 game pack icon was leaked and speculation started, players were looking forward to something new.
The selling point of the game pack – or part of the hype when the six month road map was released anyway – was that it was a “major first”.
But what does major first actually mean and can the Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu really qualify as a major first?
Since major first was never really defined by the team, Simmers have had to make up their own minds about what can and cannot be considered as something new.
We also only have the initial blog post and game pack description to go on, but let’s break things down a bit with the information we have.
Collabs have already been done.
In The Sims 4 and previous iterations of the franchise, branded collabs have already been done. Moschino stuff and even the MAC cosmetics partnerships from the Sims 4 wouldn’t really make this a major first – no matter how big the Star Wars franchise is.
Story play has been done.
The description of the Sims 4 Star Wars game pack reads a lot like it might be a little bit like Strangerville. While it does sound like it will be less linear than that, a pack that has a specific story angle to it has also been done.
Outer space has been done.
While Sixam in The Sims 4 is a hidden world, travel to space has been done while The Sims 3 had an Into the Future expansion was very much the other worldly game pack.
Defining a major first for a franchise that has been around for as long as The Sims has is incredibly difficult. There is very little that has not been done in one way or another.
The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu is set to release on 8 September, so we might still find some elements of the pack to surprise us.
Overall, though, the initial reaction to the pack has not been great – despite Star Wars being one of the biggest franchises around the world. In an independent poll run back in Janaury by Digital Spy, Star Wars was last on the list of things players wanted.
Many players are hopeful that the franchise will soon move on to The Sims 5. But as we recently noted, a string of new job postings on the EA jobs portal suggests that The Sims 4 will be around for another while yet.
