Giving SimCity Bella Goth the car she can’t have in The Sims 4

Back in the days of SimCity 4, players could buy a car for their Sim and even drive it around. Yes, SimCity, the game that's about building a city and not about playing with Sims.

Cars in The Sims 4 is something that remains high on the wish list for many players. It’s not so much using them as a way to commute – not personally speaking anyway – but just that they are kind of a staple of The Sims franchise.

In The Sims 1, the carpool service that would rock up to take Sims to work was an iconic feature of the game. And sure, you can get cars in The Sims 4 without using mods, but they are just décor objects.

Sims 4 modders like Arnie Sims, who created the Brookheights Open World mod,  have already showed that it is possible to create some sort of vehicle system.

Personally speaking, usable cars aren’t at the top of the wishlist for making the game better. A return of the iconic Sims carpool would be grand, but it’s not something I want to make angry comments on the internet about.

And yet, while swept up in a wave of nostalgia playing SimCity 4 recently, it was hard to overlook the feature that allows you to move Sims into the neighbourhood and purchase a car for your Sim.

There isn’t anything fancy about this interaction – the whole point of SimCity is to build a city and not play with Sims, but… and sorry for being that person, it is still more than what players currently have in The Sims 4.

We know, we know. We are not trying to drag the game for the sake of it. We love The Sims 4. And in the grander scheme of things, we really can’t be that bothered about cars. We are just having a little  tongue-in-cheek moment with the game we love dearly.

Right, where were we? Oh yes, cars in a Sim game that isn’t about Sims but building cities. In SimCity 4, you can move some of the iconic Sims into your town and choose a car for them.

Nothing fancy, just a simple selection for both a vehicle and pedestrian style for whichever Sim you have chosen. In this case, we’re picking Bella Goth to give her the car she never got in her current incarnation.

But wait, there’s more! If you so desire, in this game that’s about constructing a city and not about playing with Sims, you can actually drive the car. As your Sim.

Again, nothing overly fancy about this interface or process. It doesn’t actually add anything other than getting frustrated to gameplay (for me personally) and it is unlikely that being able to drive a car around in The Sims 4 will take the game to a whole new level. If I wanted to spend my time doing that, I’d get Mario Kart.

But, you know, it’s something to ponder while we wait to find out what the big Sims 21st anniversary gift might be and whether it might even include cars.
