RB Leipzig vs Liverpool: Line-up, UCL prediction and result

Klopp takes on Nagelsmann with his Reds in UCL clash at Budapest's Puskas Arena.

The master meets the apprentice as Liverpool go to Budapest to play RB Leipzig in their Uefa Champions League last 16 first leg clash on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp is back in the country where he made his name with his ‘heavy metal football’, pitting his wits against Julian Nagelsmann, who at 33-years-old is two decades his junior.

It’s a match moved to the Puskas Arena in Hungary by the authorities, with the German government attempting to prevent the spread of new variants of the Covid-19 virus.

Liverpool cruised through to the knockouts at the top of Group D ahead of Italian side Atalanta, aided by the ropey form of third-placed Ajax.

Leipzig, meanwhile, put together a run of three wins in their last four pool games to finish second behind Paris Saint-Germain in Group H, knocking out Liverpool’s English Premier League rivals Manchester United in the process.

The Reds have had to contend with a host of injury problems this season, derailing their EPL title defence and threatening their bid to secure a seventh European crown.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all huge misses at the back, with Fabinho also a doubt, meaning transfer deadline day signing Ozan Kabak could be in line for his continental debut in defence.

Veteran James Milner hobbled off during his side’s Premier League fixture at Leicester, which could leave him as yet another absentee alongside Naby Keita and Diogo Jota.

Dayot Upamecano was a defensive target for the away side and should line-up against them on Tuesday having just announced his end-of-season transfer to Bayern Munich.

Ibrahima Konte and Justin Kluivert have both made returns from injury and could well play a part at the Red Bull Arena.

Emil Forsberg is nearing his return, while there are doubts over Benjamin Henrichs and Konrad Laimer, with January arrival Dominik Szoboszlai still in the treatment room.
