It’s that time of the month again where Simmers are preparing for an update to The Sims 4 base game. This time, the patch will precede the new Paranormal Stuff Pack, which is set to be released on 26 January 2021.
While there should be some of the usual bug fixes included, the patch will also include an overhaul of some moodlets with the addition of a “Scared” buff added to the base game. Some events that made Sims “Tense” before will now change to them being “Scared”.
The January base game update for The Sims 4 will also add the “Brave Reward Trait”. So, if you use any mods that add things like custom traits or enhance the game’s emotional systems, you should be sure to back up your files before you patch.
There won’t be any ghost babies or graveyards included in the Paranormal Stuff pack, but it will be interesting to see what sort of changes might appear with the Haunted House Lot Trait that’s coming with the pack.
Release date and time for the Sims 4 Paranormal Stuff Patch
The Sims 4 base game will get a patch update on 21 January, a day before the deep dive live stream for the upcoming pack. Patches usually release around 20:00 SAST (that’s 18:00 GMT and 10:00 Pacific Time).
That said, the base game update which included a huge skin tone overhaul to The Sims 4 in December 2020 was released a day early as a surprise.
Preparing mods and CC for the Sims 4 Paranormal Stuff Patch
Patches and game updates will always impact mods and custom content in The Sims 4, so it is important to take care and prepare your game ahead of time.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for a big update, there’s a slightly longer version of this post over here (published prior to the Eco Lifestyle patch), but we’ll give you a quick TL:DR.
- Back up your Sims 4 save files and all your other files.
- Turn off automatic game updates.
- Start a ‘vanilla’ save that you can use after the update to slowly test whether everything is working.
- Remove your mods and CC folder before starting up your game after the update.
- Don’t add back any script mods until they have been confirmed as working or they have been updated.
- Slowly add back CC – unless you are 100% certain they have been reported as working or you have updated your files.
Turning CC and mods back on after a Sims 4 game update
Sometimes after an update, players notice that their mods and custom content stopped showing up. Often, this due to the update disabling them.
You have to turn mods and CC back on after an update. To do this, head over to game options (after starting up your game) check that script mods and custom content has been enabled. You can find those settings as indicated in the screenshot below. After doing this, restart your game.

The official Sims 4 forums as well as the Discord servers (or any other communication channels) of mods and CC creators are a great source of information.
