Liverpool vs RB Leipzig: Line-up, UCL prediction and result

Klopp’s Reds eye quarter-final place and a break from EPL misery. Liverpool face RB Leipzig in the Champions League last 16 second leg.

Liverpool and RB Leipzig renew hostilities for the second leg of their Uefa Champions League first knockout round tie on Wednesday.

Covid-19 restrictions in Germany and England mean the pair will meet on neutral ground in Hungary, as they did for the first leg, at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

It comes as a blessed relief for the 2019 European champions, who are on a shocking run of form in the English Premier League, losing six in a row at the Anfield home for the first time.

They fared better in coming away from their first leg with a 2-0 advantage, as boss Jurgen Klopp took the upper hand against young pretender Julian Nagelsmann.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were both on target after half time, as the patient Reds took control of the tie against their Bundesliga opposition.

While it’s great to get away from the grind of the league, Klopp can’t escape his lengthy injury list.

There remains a hole in defence where crocked Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip should be, while captain Jordan Henderson is also ruled out for the foreseeable future.

Even Ozan Kabak, plucked from the German top flight on transfer deadline day to bolster the defensive ranks, is doubtful along with out-of-sorts Roberto Firmino.

Plenty of other first team regulars at least had the physical and mental benefit of a break in the EPL at the weekend, as the Reds attempt to repeat their feat of two years ago.

Leipzig are missing Konrad Laimer and Dominik Szoboszlai for the second leg, but may have Angelino and Willi Orban at their disposal, despite the pair not being fit for last weekend’s Bundesliga game against Freiburg.
