afcon predictions day eight 2022

Afcon predictions, fixtures, group standings and results: 17 January 2022

Note: While this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is officially referred as Afcon 2021, due to the tournament’s postponement, for continuity, we might sometimes refer to it as Afcon 2022.

Group A comes to a head at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, with plenty to play for behind host nation Cameroon.

The Indomitable Lions have two wins from two and are safely through to the knock outs, with Burkina Faso and Cape Verde well in the mix on three points apiece.

Even outsiders Ethiopia remain in with a mathematical shout going into the final round of fixtures.

Group A: Burkina Faso vs Ethiopia

Burkina Faso and Ethiopia meet at the Kouekong Stadium on Monday, with qualification from Group A up for grabs.

The Stallions are in good shape to make progress to the Round of 16 after Hassane Bande scored the only goal to seal victory over Cape Verde.

It was a necessary three points following defeat to hosts Cameroon in the Afcon curtain-raiser, keeping the Burkinabe in the hunt.

Their opponents have lost two from two but could still sneak into the last 16 if they can spring a surprise and snatch a win.

That doesn’t seem particularly likely after a 4-1 loss to the Cameroonians followed up their opening reverse against Cape Verde.

But with the expanded, 24-team tournament creating bonus slots in the knockouts, the minnows retain a punchers’ chance going into their final pool fixture.

Kick off at 18:00.

Group A: Cape Verde vs Cameroon

The pressure is all on Cape Verde as they meet host nation Cameroon in the final round of Group A fixtures at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.

Back-to-back wins for the Indomitable Lions over Burkina Faso and minnows Ethiopia see them through to the knockout stages in their home tournament with a game to spare.

Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko-Ekambi both struck twice last time out as the Cameroonians finally opened the floodgates on a goal-shy competition in Yaounde, backing up their come-from-behind success against the Burkinabe on the opening afternoon.

Progression to the knockout stage is in the balance for Cape Verde, thanks to their win and a loss so far.

After edging past the Ethiopians on the first day of Afcon, they were edged out by the Stallions on Thursday to leave the pair locked on three points in the battle to finish in the top two.

Kick off at 18:00.
