Note: While this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is officially referred as Afcon 2021 due to the tournament?s postponement, for continuity, we might sometimes refer to it as Afcon 2022.
The third best team at the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is decided on Saturday, as Burkina Faso meet host nation Cameroon in the 3rd/4th place play-off.
One of the more dubious contests in world football events pits together the two sides teeming with disappointment following defeat in their respective semi-finals.
It also makes for a rematch of the Afcon curtain-raiser, when the home side came from behind to win 2-1 a month ago.
The Indomitable Lions suffered the cruelest fate when they were beaten in a penalty shootout by Egypt on Thursday night.
Harold Moukoudi and James Lea Siliki both had their tame spot kicks saved, before Clinton N’Jie duffed his effort wide of the right-hand post as the hosts crumbled from 12 yards out.
It was a dispiriting end to a clash where neither side could break the deadlock in two hours of play, as Mohamed Salah’s Pharaohs began to fray at the edges.
The Stallions fell victim to improving pre-tournament favourites Senegal, who saw off their fellow West Africans 3-1 on Wednesday.
VAR once again played havoc to chalk off two Burkina penalties, although Blati Toure’s 82nd minute goal gave his side hope at 2-1 down.
But English Premier League star Sadio Mane popped up with a high class finish three minutes from time to seal a final spot for the Lions of Teranga.
The Burkinabe had earlier come through their quarter-final against Tunisia with a 1-0 victory, having edged past plucky Gabon in the Round of 16.
A win over Cape Verde and a draw with Ethiopia sealed progress from Group A following their opening day disappointment.
The Cameroonians topped the pool thanks to a 4-1 thumping of Ethiopia before a draw against Cape Verde with qualification already secured.
Minnows Comoros were no match for the hosts in the Round of 16, with a 2-0 victory over the Gambia in the quarter-finals paving the way for their ultimately unsuccessful crack at reaching a home final.
Kick off at 21:00 (Central African Time).
