The last pair of quarter-finalists are decided at the delayed 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday, as the Round of 16 comes to a climax.
Fifa World Cup semi-finalists from 2022 Morocco go up against 1996 Afcon champions South Africa for a coveted place in the last eight.
They follow the clash between neighbours Mali and Burkina Faso, who attempt to keep their continental dream alive earlier in the evening.
Mali vs Burkina Faso – 19.00
It’s a West African derby to kick off the final night of Round of 16 action at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday, as Mali go up against Burkina Faso in Cote d’Ivoire.
A cagey affair might be the best bet, too, with both progressing from the group stage despite making hard work of it at times.
Mali have the slight edge having gone unbeaten in Group E, winning their opener against South Africa to set them on their way.
A pair of draws against Tunisia and Namibia followed, but a five-point haul was enough to see them top the standing and progress to the knockouts.
The Burkinabe also opened with victory in Group D, seeing off future giantkillers Mauritania by the only goal.
A 2-2 draw with faltering Algeria then proved enough to see them through the pool as runners-up, in spite of defeat to surprise group winners Angola.
Morocco vs South Africa – 22.00
A battle between two former Africa Cup of Nations champions decides the final place in the last eight on Tuesday, as Morocco meet South Africa to complete the Round of 16 in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Atlas Lions have, incredibly, not been Afcon kings since all the way back in 1976.
But their recent form tells a much more promising story, including their unforgettable run to the semi-finals of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.
And their continental quest has gone smoothly so far, with three unbeaten games and only a single goal conceded seeing them top Group F.
They first swatted aside combative Tanzania before a narrow victory over Zambia sandwiched a draw against DR Congo.
South Africa had to do it the hard way in Group E after failing to lay a glove on Mali in an opening 2-0 loss.
Nerves were jangling for Bafana Bafana ahead of their derby with Namibia, but they sailed through the challenge to win 4-0 and set themselves up for knockout qualification.
All ambition was set aside as they played out the goalless draw they needed with hapless Tunisia to finish as runners-up, but veteran boss Hugo Broos knows he needs more for a run deep into the Afcon tournament.
