English FA Cup Fifth Round predictions, fixtures and results: 28 February – 3 March 2025

Round of 16 sees Manchester United host Fulham, giantkillers Plymouth go to Manchester City and Newcastle play Brighton in English FA Cup this weekend.

It’s FA Cup Fifth Round time this weekend, as the 16 remaining clubs battle it out to progress towards a date with Wembley Stadium in the spring.

Two more wins will do the trick for those left in the hat, with the semi-finals and final all played under the famous arch in north London.

Reigning champions Manchester United take centre stage at Old Trafford on Sunday, facing an all-Premier League tie with Fulham.

It’s a precious opportunity to put the misery of a desperate EPL campaign to one side for Ruben Amorim and his embattled charges, who knocked out Leicester in the last round having won a dramatic Third Round tie at Arsenal on penalties.

The visitors, by contrast, having come through a pair of games against lower league opposition and might have to consider balancing their league tilt for continental qualification as they head to the north west.

Sunday’s other FA Cup contest is a high quality tussle at St James’, Park, as Brighton make the long trip north to Newcastle.

The Toon Army, who also have the League Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley to look forward to, are desperate to lift the Cup for the first time since 1955.

Wins at League One Birmingham and at home to Bromley of League Tow have set them up, while the Seagulls breezed past Norwich in Round Three before edging Chelsea three weeks ago to set up a date on Tyneside.

And could there be a giant killing in the air at the Etihad Stadium?

Fans of second tier strugglers Plymouth can certainly dream, having already seen their heroes ditch mighty Liverpool out of the competition in Round Four.

Their reward this Saturday is a trip to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who should be up for the Cup having been eliminated from the Uefa Champions League and with their hopes of retaining their Premier League title hanging by the thinnest of threads.

Another of the all-EPL matches, meanwhile, pits Bournemouth against Wolves.

The Cherries have stunned their top flight rivals so far this season, while their visitors from the Black Country could use a pick-me-up to distract from their relegation dogfight.

A pair of derbies will see local rivals lock horns on Saturday lunchtime, too, as the FA Cup weekend proper starts with a snarl.

South London hostilities are renewed at Selhurst Park when Premier League Crystal Palace go up against Millwall of the Championship.

The Eagles have eased past minnows Doncaster and Stockport so far, while the Lions knocked out National League Dagenham in Round Three before an impressive success at Leeds took them through to the last 16.

Back up in the north west it’s a classic contest between Preston and Burnley.

The north Lancashire pair are both seeing plenty of each other in the Championship this year with the Clarets making the short trip to Deepdale in the better form, as they continue their push to return to the Premier League.

Knockout football extends all the way to Monday night and another top flight showdown between Nottingham Forest and Ipswich.

Both former FA Cup winners are eying a run deep into this season’s competition at the City Ground, with the Tractor Boys lifting the pot for Bobby Robson in 1978, while two-time winners Forest last reached the final under Robson’s fellow managerial great Brian Clough in 1991.

Round Five begins in the West Midlands on Friday night, as Aston Villa take on Cardiff under the Villa Park lights.

Unai Emery’s men dispensed with Tottenham on home turf in the last round, having achieved the same feat by an identical 2-1 score line against West Ham in Round Three.

Their visitors from the Welsh capital won at Championship hotshots Sheffield United to clear their first hurdle, before third round penalty shootout drama saw them overcome Stoke.
