English Premier League predictions, fixtures and results: 26 – 28 December 2022

English Premier League returns with trio of Boxing Day London derbies, Liverpool and Manchester City on the road, and Chelsea and Manchester United in home action on Tuesday.

The English Premier League returns with a Christmas cracker on Monday, as Boxing Day sees a domestic football comeback hot on the heels of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

It’s six weeks since the last EPL fixtures as top flight soccer was forced into a winter break for the global showpiece.

But spare a thought for the players who went deep into the tournament in the Middle East, who barely returned home with time to pack a stocking, let alone put their feet up in front of the festive TV.

Monday’s action builds towards a tasty derby at the London Stadium, as leaders Arsenal go to West Ham.

The Gunners are desperate to pick up right where they left off in November with a sparkling run of form that gave them a five-point buffer at the top of the table, while the Hammers resume just a point above the drop zone.

Another capital city clash kicks off the return to domestic action, as fourth-placed Tottenham head to overachievers Brentford for the lunchtime match.

Liverpool also feature on Boxing Day, returning to their task of cracking back into the top four.

Jurgen Klopp’s men head to Aston Villa, who have won three from four in the Premier League since sacking Reds legend Steven Gerrard as coach.

Two EPL heavyweights, meanwhile, have home appointments on Tuesday.

Manchester United welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford as they start life without Cristiano Ronaldo.

Boss Erik ten Hag now has the task of building on a tentative improvement that sees the Red Devils sit fifth in the standings, without the Portuguese superstar hogging the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Also playing on Tuesday are Chelsea, whose fans will be praying they have hit the reset button over the World Cup gap.

Graham Potter’s Blues were on a miserable run of three straight defeats, leaving them eighth in the EPL table and only five points above Bournemouth, who are the visitors to Stamford Bridge.

The festive action even staggers into Wednesday, although there’s no sense of leftovers with the reigning champions taking centre stage.

It’s a cross-Pennine contest, too, as Manchester City go to Elland Road to tackle Leeds, who have plenty of work to do to escape the relegation battle under coach Jesse Marsch.

Elsewhere on Monday Crystal Palace and Fulham complete a hat-trick of London derbies when they meet at Selhurst Park, with both eyeing up the top half of the table.

Newcastle were absolutely flying as the World Cup came calling, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting third in the Premier League standings.

The Toon Army go to Leicester on Boxing Day, with the Foxes also much improved following their shocking start to the season under Brendan Rodgers.

A Christmas nightmare may continue to unfold for at least one of Everton and Wolves, who meet at Goodison Park with both firmly in the relegation mire.

And there’s a south coast contest between Southampton and Brighton, with the visitors eyeing the top six and the hosts looking for their first points under coach Nathan Jones.
