The knockout picture will continue take shape on Friday, as Euro 2024 continues with another blockbuster hat-trick of fixtures across Germany.
It all leads to the classic contest between the Netherlands and France, who meet in the final match of the day in Group D.
Poland and Austria go head-to-head before that in the same pool, after Slovakia and Ukraine meet for a potentially defining Group E game in Dusseldorf.
*All kick off times in local time.
Group E: Slovakia vs Ukraine – 15.00
It’s moving day in Group E at Euro 2024 on Friday, as Slovakia and Ukraine kick off a fascinating day of football in Germany with their Dusseldorf contest.
The pair had polar opposite fortunes as they made their tournament entrance earlier in the week.
And just what fortune for the Slovakians, who came away from Frankfurt on Monday with a famous victory over group favourites Belgium.
Ivan Schranz put the underdogs into a seventh-minute lead over the nation ranked third in the Fifa World Rankings – and they clung on for all three points after Romelu Lukaku was twice denied goals after VAR interventions.
No such luck for the Ukrainians, desperate as a squad to give light relief to a country under the dark cloud of war with Russia.
Serhiy Rebrov’s men were picked off by unfancied Romania inside a raucous Allianz Arena in Munich, tumbling to a 3-0 defeat that puts them firmly on the back foot in their bid to make it through to the knockout phase.
Group D: Poland vs Austria – 18.00
The pressure is firmly on in Group D at Euro 2024 on Friday evening, as Poland meet Austria at Berlin’s iconic Olimpiastadion.
Something has to give as both nations come into the match pointless following their opening game defeats.
And both have cause for grievance over that fact, not least with the Austrians going down by a single goal to tournament favourites France on Monday night.
Max Wober was unlucky to turn a Kylian Mbappe cross into his own net for what proved to be the only goal of the game in Dusseldorf, which was scant reward for an organised, well-drilled effort under the tutelage of veteran coach Ralph Rangnick.
Poland also went down by the narrowest of margins against the Netherlands and were left to rue the absence of leading light Robert Lewandowski as he recovers from injury.
They had earlier taken a surprise lead thanks to a Adam Buksa header, before Cody Gakpo pulled level to pave the way for serial spoiler Wout Weghorst to pop up with yet another decisive goal on the big stage to leave the Poles with an uphill battle.
Group D: Netherlands vs France – 21.00
A monster Euro 2024 clash between the Netherlands and France will see at least one nation qualify for the knockout stage from Group D on Friday night.
Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena is the venue as the pair meet with both having three points in the bank after the first round of fixtures.
Kylian Mbappe was at the centre of attention as Les Bleus edged past tricky customers Austria 1-0 in Dusseldorf on Monday.
His speculative first half cross prompted an own goal from the helpless Max Wober, before missing a clear chance of his own and eventually leaving the field at the death with what was later confirmed to be a broken nose.
It leaves the 25-year-old global star a doubt for this one, which is just the boost the Dutch will welcome.
They had to do it the hard way in their pool opener, having fallen behind early on to a Adam Buksa header in Hamburg.
Cody Gakpo hit back just before the half-hour mark but Ronald Koeman and his side had to wait until the 83rd minute, when that man Wout Weghorst popped up with a potentially critical winner in a tightly contested group.
