Group F: Georgia vs Czechia – 15.00

Any thoughts of what might have been must be shaken off sharpish by Georgia and Czechia on Saturday, as the pair meet in an attempt to kickstart their Euro 2024 campaigns at the second attempt in Hamburg.

Both underdogs showed more than a flash of promise in their opening Group F games.

But they came away from tough assignments against Turkiye and Portugal respectively without a point to show for their efforts.

The Georgians in particular contributed to a raucous first outing at a European Championship finals against their geographical neighbours, as Georges Mikautadze netted a first half equaliser for their first goal at a major tournament.

Turkish wonderkid Arda Gulur had other ideas, though, restoring a one-goal lead before Kerem Akturkoglu scored with the last kick to make it 3-1.

Czechia’s injury time agony was far worse, as they slipped up at the back to allow Francisco Conceicao to complete a turnaround victory for the Portuguese.

They had pulled level through an own goal that bounced in off Robin Hranac, who ironically was the defender least at fault in a collective collapse, which proved a real sucker punch after Lukas Provod had swept in a shock opener just after the hour mark.

Group F: Turkiye vs Portugal – 18.00

Turkiye and Portugal collide in Group F for what is a thrilling Euro 2024 prospect on Saturday in Dortmund.

Signal Iduna Park is the iconic venue befitting of the match up, with the pair having both picked up three points from their opening fixtures to ease the early tournament tension.

Cristiano Ronaldo was kept pretty quiet by dogged Czechia on Tuesday night.

But no matter, as the old stager made a good fist of looking genuinely pleased for the next generation, as Francisco Conceicao scored a 92nd-minute winner that had looked anything but certain.

The 21-year-old completed a comeback that was necessary after Lukas Provod had opened the scoring in Leipzig, only for Portuguese pressure to tell seven minutes later when Robin Hranac was unlucky to bundle into his own net.

Turkiye were also made to work by tournament debutants Georgia, who equalised after Mert Muldur had volleyed in the 25th-minute opener.

But then enter whizkid Arda Gulur to restore the lead with a beauty, before Kerem Akturkoglu secured a 3-1 victory at the death amid a frenzied atmosphere.

It banished the dark memories of their winless, hopeless last Euros campaign, with Ronaldo and Co next on the list for Vincenzo Montella and Co.

Group E: Belgium vs Romania – 21.00

Belgium will be doing everything they can not to have to hit the panic button when they go up against Romania in Group E at Euro 2024 on Saturday.

It’s a showdown in Cologne that, if it goes the same way as the Belgians’ opener, will leave them on the brink of a humiliating exit at the first hurdle, despite arriving across the border in Germany as number three in the Fifa World Rankings.

That’s all due to their 1-0 defeat at the hands of unfancied Slovakia in Frankfurt on Monday.

Kevin de Bruyne and Co are under the microscope after Ivan Schranz scored the only goal after seven minutes, although Romelu Lukaku did have two chalked off at the other end thanks to VAR.

It also means the Romanians are in the box seat to qualify for the Round of 16, after causing an upset in thrashing Ukraine 3-0 in Munich.

The Allianz Arena was a sea of yellow and it provided the platform for the underdogs to record their first win on the big stage since shocking England at Euro 2000 24 years ago.

Captain Nicolae Stanciu started the spree just before the half hour mark, before Razvan Marin’s speculative effort squeezed under the grasp of despairing keeper Andriy Lunin.

The rout was complete just four minutes later when Denis Dragus held the offside line perfectly before tapping in a cross from Dennis Man.

And what an opportunity they now have to capitalize on Belgian nerves and seal that precious knockout place.
