Euro 2024 Round of 16 predictions, fixtures, results: Tuesday 2 July

We will discover our last two quarter-finalists at Euro 2024 in Germany on Tuesday, as the Round of 16 comes to a head.

Impressive Austria set out to become the last nation to make it through but will be wary of the challenge of Turkiye’s impressive young squad when they meet in Leipzig.

Their game comes after the contest between Romania and the Netherlands in Munich, with the winners slated to meet in Berlin on Saturday.

Round of 16: Romania vs Netherlands – 18.00

The penultimate Round of 16 clash at Euro 2024 has thrown up a contest between sides with near-identical pool phase records, as underdogs Romania keep their dream alive against the Netherlands.

A four-point Group D haul was only enough to carry the Dutch through as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Wout Weghorst completed a comeback, 2-1 win over Poland in their opening match, popping up with another late show following Cody Gakpo’s equalizer just before the half hour mark.

And a draw with hotshots France left them sitting pretty in a competitive group.

So competitive, in fact, that 3-2 defeat to well-oiled Austria saw their opponents top the lot while Ronald Koeman’s men slipped perilously close to an exit at the first hurdle.

Romania achieved exactly the same points tally yet finished top of Group E.

Their opening hammering of Ukraine set them up perfectly amid a sea of yellow inside Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Nicolae Stanciu, Razvan Marin and Denis Dragus were all on target to put their nation in pole position despite the odds being stacked against them.

A battling, 2-0 reverse against Belgium left them with work to do, but Marin was on hand from the penalty spot in the final game with Slovakia, seeing them finish top by virtue of goals scored.

The winners advance to a last eight tie in Berlin on Saturday, where either Austria or Turkiye will lie in wait in the kinder half of the draw.

Round of 16: Austria vs Turkiye – 21.00

Austria and Turkiye meet in the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 on Tuesday, as they compete to become the final nation to book their quarter-final berth in Germany.

And it’s an intriguing match up, with both rejuvenated in recent times and showing more than a glimmer of their potential in the tournament so far.

Defeat by the only goal to France, thanks to an own goal from the unfortunate Max Wober, felt like an unjust return for the Austrians in their Group D opener.

But Ralph Rangnick’s smart side soon made amends.

They were full value for their 3-1 win over Poland, with goals from Gernot Trauner, Christoph Baumgartner and a Marko Arnautovic penalty.

And it was a different kind of impressive in a helter-skelter game with the Netherlands as they came out on top with a 3-2 success that saw them pip the French to top spot.

Romano Schmid and Marcel Sabitzer added to Donyell Malen’s early own goal in the Olimpiastadion, as they sealed a result that sees them avoid the likes of Spain and hosts Germany until a possible final.

It’s a less likely dream for Turkiye but they too sealed a pair of Group F wins to emerge as runners-up.

A 3-0 mauling at the hands of Portugal threatened to derail their Euros hopes, with memories of their miserable Euro 2020 campaign not far from the surface.

But three points either side did the business.

Cenk Tosun’s 94th-minute winner against Czechia sealed second place – and avoided a knockout meeting with impressive Spain – after Hakan Calhanoglu’s opener had been cancelled out in Hamburg.

It was a return to the flashes of encouragement that saw them safely through a tricky, emotional opener with neighbours and tournament debutants Georgia on the opening weekend.

Goals from Mert Muldur, Arda Guler and late on from Kerem Akturkoglu earned a hard-fought 3-1 success that wasn’t certain until the dying seconds.

It means the prize up for grabs is a return to Berlin to play the winners of the day’s earlier game between Romania and the Netherlands.
