Here’s what percentage of team goals the PSL top scorers have contributed

Gabadinho Mhango remained at the top of the top scorers’ list in the PSL, despite Orlando Pirates losing 0-1 to Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby over the weekend.  Despite dominating many facets of the attack, Bucs could not convert their chances.

Lebogang Manyama scored the only goal of the game, completely against the run of play. Chiefs’ keeper Daniel Akpeyi was also in top form in the Amakhosi goal-posts throughout the match.

The PSL result means Amakhosi extended their lead to seven points at the top of the PSL league standings, while Bucs remained third on the log.

Coach Ernst Middendorp was overjoyed with his side after they completed the league double over their Soweto rivals.

“It’s quite a good outcome, we were talking a lot about advice from Steve Komphela, Jomo [Sono] and basically they are right. These last ten games it’s about mentality, how you handle it, how you take it,” Middendorp told SuperSport TV.

“And I know my players, I know this team, I know them very well, I could see during the week already that we’re prepared, we want it and unfortunately here and there some injuries.

“Leonardo [Castro] had to go off as you see, Willard Katsande had to go out and that’s always a difficult moment, players from the bench, in particular huge compliment to [Anthony] Akumu coming on and taking over in a really crucial position.

“I’m very proud of it and I think each and everybody on the Kaizer Chiefs side, players, technical team, supporters, deserve this moment and they should enjoy it.”

Despite the low scoring affair, a few players have been scoring freely in the PSL this season. However, the recurring theme of goal drought’s will most likely be brought up again once the season closes its books. With the season almost three quarters through, the average goals per match sits at 2.23, marginally lower than last season’s 2.26.

Goal scoring has been shared around, somewhat, but teams like relegation-threatened AmaZulu should be alarmed by Bongi Ntuli having scored over 80% of their goals in the league.
