The end of a decade usually brings with it a period of reflection. Over the last ten years, some records have been broken while others look set to remain forever.
In sport, one of the most keenly observed statistics is the age of the athletes who achieve great things. Remarkable people are becoming increasingly younger, but there’s hope for the more senior squad members, too.
In the last decade (starting in 2010), Kaizer Chiefs have had two of their second-oldest ever goal scorers. While Amakhosi fans might suggest that this is the precise reason for their trophy drought, you’ve got to give credit where it is due.
The oldest goal scorer for Kaizer Chiefs over the last decade is Reneilwe Letsholonyane – who was a spritely 33 years, ten months and 18 days when he scored in a 1-2 win over Tuks back in 2016.
While that might be considered as getting on a bit in modern football years, he’s still some way off the all-time record.
It seems unlikely that John “Shoes” Moshoeu’s record for both Chiefs and the PSL will ever be broken.
He was 39 years, four months and five days when he became the oldest scorer for Amakhosi in 2005. Intriguingly, two years later at the age of 41 years, 11 months and 17 days, Shoes became the oldest ever scorer in the PSL. He was playing for AmaZulu by then, but achieved the feat against his former club – Kaizer Chiefs.
Four of Chiefs’ oldest scorers of the last decade found the net in 2019. Bernard Parker, aged 33 years, one month and four days scored int he Nedbank Cup in April last season while Willard Katsande had just turned 33 years old when he scored in January 2019.
The other two – Daniel Cardoso and Leonard Castro – both just south of 30 years and six months – both scored this season. Cardoso against Pirates on 9 November and Castro most recently on 7 December in the frenetic 5-3 win against Bloemfontein Celtic.
