Southampton historic record

Southampton have found it difficult to maintain their top half credentials in the Premier League in recent years, following a succession of top eight finishes that brought Uefa Europa League soccer to St Mary’s.

The Saints may have more survival-orientated ambitions at the moment, but it’s better than their EPL relegation of 2005 which was compounded by a further drop to the third tier in 2009.

They had previously put together 27 successive campaigns in the top flight recording their highest ever finishing position of second in the standings in 1984.

Southampton also lifted the FA Cup trophy after winning the competition at Wembley Stadium at the end of the 1975/76 season.

The Saints have also twice reached the final of the League Cup, finishing the tournament as runners-up in 1979 and 2017.

Tier three football is the lowest level the club has played at since becoming members of the English Football League in 1920.

About Southampton

Southampton Football Club are members of the English Premier League and have built a reputation in recent times for producing a series of talented young players capable of playing at the top level of the game.

While Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and the rest have moved on for huge transfer fees, the Saints have had to fight more than most for EPL consistency.

A spell in the second and third tiers didn’t help, ahead of their top flight return in 2012 before coaches Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman brought top half success and European football to the Solent.

The Saints play their home fixtures at St Mary’s Stadium, having moved from The Dell, their cosy old ground, in 2001.

Southampton fans look to near neighbours Portsmouth as their main rivals, contesting the South Coast Derby when the two teams meet.

Recent rivalries have also grown with fellow south coast clubs Bournemouth and Brighton in the EPL in recent seasons.
