Watford historic record

Watford enjoyed a meteoric rise up through the English Football League divisions, starting with their promotion from the fourth tier in 1978.

They clambered straight through Division Three before winning promotion to the top tier of the English game in 1982 under the coaching of Graham Taylor and the chairmanship of Elton John.

It didn’t stop there, with a second-place finish sealing Uefa Cup football while paving the way for an FA Cup final appearance the following year.

A couple more years of strong runs in the Cup followed in the 1980s, before the Hornets slipped back down to the quiet life of the second tier for the most part until their return to the Premier League in 2015.

They reached the FA Cup semis the following season and went one step further in 2019, striding out at Wembley Stadium for the final, only to be well beaten by Manchester City.

About Watford

Watford Football Club play in the English Premier League, with the 2019/20 season marking their fifth campaign in the EPL since being promoted back to the top division in 2015.

The Hornets were made famous by their rise from the old Fourth Division to the First Division under future England manager Graham Taylor, during Elton John’s tenure as owner of the club.

Watford play their home fixtures at their Vicarage Road stadium, a few miles north of London in the county of Hertfordshire.

While Premier League rivalries have been hard to find for Watford fans, they do view any fixtures against nearby Luton Town with a keen eye.

Watford have become an interesting managerial test case over recent seasons, with Italian owners the Pozzo family operating a revolving door that has seen coaches come and go with eye-catching frequency.

Few could argue with the policy as the Hornets finished a strong 2018/19 season 11th in the EPL standings while also reaching the FA Cup final.
