About AmaZulu

AmaZulu is a well-known Premier Soccer League (PSL) club based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The likes of George Dearnaley and Clive Barker will always be synonymous with the club, but they have endured tricky times in recent years.

Usuthu won promotion to the Premiership by controversially buying Thanda Royal Zulu’s top-flight status in 2017.

At the time, owner of rivals Royal Eagles, Sibusiso Mpisane, accused AmaZulu of using a “wheelchair” to gain top-flight status.

Historic record

AmaZulu FC was formed in 1932 as Zulu Royals and there have been plenty of ups and downs since. They enjoyed a period of success in the early 1970s, winning the league in 1972.

However, turbulence followed, but AmaZulu had another notable period in the 1990s. Clive Barker led them to Coca-Cola Cup victory and third place in the league in 1992.

AmaZulu have been a yo-yo club of sorts in recent years. Barker was quoted by KickOff as criticising Usuthu’s approach in the modern era.

“It’s crazy to bring foreign coaches all the time. If you look at the fate of Durban clubs you worry what might happen at the end of every season because of the past. I’m talking about AmaZulu and Golden Arrows,” he said.
