Chippa United

Coaches come and go at Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Chippa United, but they have nevertheless remained the bedrock of Eastern Cape football since their move from the Western Cape.

The Chilli Boys, as they are affectionately known, have a close business relationship with Orlando Pirates and have played a role in the development of many of their players. Thembinkosi Lorch is one standout name among that group.

Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi is notorious for not giving his coaches much time before handing them the sack, but Chippa have nevertheless remained relatively stable in terms of results over the last few years.

Chippa usually play their home games at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, but occasionally at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.

Historic Record

Chippa United FC was formed in January 2010. Initially, they were based in Nyanga, Cape Town. They rapidly shot up to the Premiership, but were relegated on the first attempt in 2012-13.

Chippa moved straight back up in 2013-14, and in 2015-16, they enjoyed a particularly impressive season. That campaign saw Chippa finish sixth in the Premiership, but they have struggled to recapture that magic since.

Even so, Chippa United deserve credit for their rapid rise up the ranks of South African football. One wonders how much further they could have come were it not for the constant hiring and firing of coaches.
