The Premier League’s most expensive transfer buys

Some of the EPL clubs have spent eye-watering sums of money on player transfers over the years.

The English Premier League has become well known for its massive transfer fees over the years, with Manchester United topping the charts for the most expensive imports.

Noisy neighbours Manchester City may have scooped up much more silverware in recent years, but it’s their rivals in red who boast the priciest EPL signings? if you think that’s a good thing.

Paul Pogba became a Premier League-record ?94.5million recruit from Serie A giants Juventus in 2016.

It’s a fee made all the more eye-watering given the French international was allowed to slip through the Old Trafford net on a free transfer four years earlier.

The Red Devils are also responsible for the next two most expensive signings, with Harry Maguire (?78.3m) and Romelu Lukaku (?76.23m) lured from EPL rivals Leicester and Everton respectively.

Maguire’s 2019 switch eclipsed the record fee for a defender set 18 months earlier when Virgil van Dijk traded Southampton for Liverpool for a shade over ?76m.

Original big spenders Chelsea have muscled their way back into the list in recent seasons, with Kepa Arrizabalaga becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in the world ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Blues went even bigger in the summer of 2020, snapping up wunderkind Kai Havertz for ?72m from Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal shelled out a similar transfer fee for winger Nicolas Pepe, while Manchester City will consider Kevin de Bruyne a relative bargain at ?68.4m.
