The English Premier League will go out with a bang this weekend, as it signs off for the last international football break of the year with a full set of fixtures.
Reigning champions Manchester City go to improving Chelsea for a heavy duty tussle to bring the EPL programme to a climax on Sunday afternoon.
City have won three on the spin – including a 6-1 Etihad Stadium thrashing last weekend – and come into the weekend top of the table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues are finally showing signs of getting their act together, including a handsome London derby win on Monday night.
Liverpool are four games unbeaten as they continue their own title tilt at home to Brentford.
The pair meet at Anfield with the visitors having also won three in a row as they continue to impress under Danish boss Thomas Frank.
Saturday sees David meet Goliath when Manchester United host Luton at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag must have the Midas touch, with his Red Devils somehow picking off three wins from their last four, despite a series of decidedly dodgy performances.
Their promoted opponents have won just once since their return to the top flight, but do sit just the right side of the relegation zone coming into the weekend.
The Premier League’s north London contingent, meanwhile, both go into Saturday matches needing to recover from a first defeat of the season.
Ange Postecoglou was the latest coach to be left bemoaning VAR technology – and the match officials using it – after his nine-man Spurs side subsided to a 4-1 loss at home to Chelsea.
His response was a damn sight more measured than that of Mikel Arteta last weekend, mind you, with the Gunners coach tearing his hair out following a narrow defeat.
The Gunners can put it right at the Emirates Stadium when they host struggling Burnley.
Wolves are the hosts for the Saturday lunchtime kick off, as Postecoglou and Co eye at least a temporary return to the top of the EPL table.
Newcastle remain firmly in the top six mix once again, with the struggles of their Uefa Champions League comeback not affecting their domestic efforts.
It’s a reunion with former club Bournemouth for Toon Army coach Eddie Howe, as he takes his side on the long trip to the south coast for the late Saturday kick off.
The day’s other match sees Everton continue their climb away from the relegation zone with a visit to Crystal Palace, who sit four points up the road from the Toffees in 11th place.
Elsewhere on Sunday there’s an opportunity for Aston Villa to bounce straight back from their third league loss of the campaign.
Unai Emery’s men host Fulham at Villa Park, with the visitors three without a win and joint-holders of the second-lowest goals tally in the top flight.
The London Stadium plays host to a mid table squabble between West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
Forest ended their winless run at home to Villa last Sunday, while the Hammers are on the slide under David Moyes having lost three on the bounce.
Brighton are also five without victory, as their excellent start recedes into the rear-view mirror.
They have the perfect opportunity to put that right with home advantage to boot, as bottom side Sheffield United head to the Amex Stadium.
