English Premier League predictions, fixtures and results: Sunday 22 May 2022
It all comes down to the drama of the final day of the English Premier League on Sunday, with both the EPL title and top flight survival on the line.
Manchester City and Liverpool reach the climax of their now familiar rivalry at the top of the table, with the reigning champions holding a one-point advantage going into the final round of fixtures.
Pep Guardiola’s bid to seal consecutive Premier League crowns now rests on one final home assignment.
But they’ll have a Merseyside legend to deal with while they’re at it, as Steven Gerrard brings his Aston Villa side to the Etihad Stadium for the grand finale.
And they won’t expect much help from down the road at Anfield either, with the Reds hosting Wolves.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will need to better City’s result for league glory, although their FA Cup and EFL Cup wins, as well as a place in the Uefa Champions League final, will provide no little comfort either way at the end of another sparkling season.
It’s going down to the wire at the wrong end of the EPL standings, too, with the threat of relegation to the Championship hanging over both Leeds and Burnley.
The Clarets clung on for a draw at Aston Villa on Thursday night, lifting them out of the drop zone and above the Yorkshire club on what is an unassailable goal difference.
Nerves will be jangling as Jesse Marsch’s men go to Brentford, then, knowing they have to better the Clarets’ result at home to Newcastle in order to survive.
Chelsea are pretty much guaranteed to finish in third place despite their awkward second half of the campaign, with relegated Watford the visitors to Stamford Bridge in what is Hornets’ boss Roy Hodgson’s final match before retirement.
That leaves the battle for fourth place and Champions League qualification between north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham.
Back-to-back defeats have seen the Gunners slip up at the very last, leaving them two points behind in-form Spurs ahead of their game at the Emirates Stadium against Everton, who came from behind to secure their top flight survival at Goodison Park on Thursday.
Antonio Conte’s men set out to complete the job at bottom club Norwich.
Manchester United can do no better than a sixth-placed finish at the end of a maddening season, as they complete Ralph Rangnick’s interim tenure at Crystal Palace with incoming boss Erik ten Hag looking on.
West Ham could pip the Red Devils in the final standings but will have to find a way past the challenge of hosts Brighton at the Amex Stadium.
Leicester and Southampton, meanwhile, meet at the King Power Stadium to see out their respective up-and-down campaigns.
