A bumper Tuesday sees two more Euro 2024 groups come to a climax in Germany, as the tournament steps up a gear with the knockout phase on the horizon.
France may well need all three points against Poland if they are to top Group D, with the Netherlands looking to fend them off if they can avoid a slip up against Austria.
It’s all to play for in Group C as well, as England look to finish the job against Slovenia, while Denmark meet Serbia.
*All kick off times in local time.
Group D: France vs Poland – 18.00
Pre-tournament favourites France are intent on a strong finish in Group D at Euro 2024 on Tuesday, when they go up against eliminated Poland in Dortmund.
Les Bleus are yet to fully fire in the continental showpiece but do have four points from a possible six.
The sight of Kylian Mbappe trudging off with a broken nose in the closing stages of their pool opener with Austria didn’t help.
Nor did the goalless stalemate with the Netherlands in Leipzig, with the Dutch holding the most slender of advantages at the pool summit.
It’s far worse for their opponents who, following back-to-back defeats, are one of the few nations coming into the final round of action with nothing but pride to play for.
Results elsewhere mean Robert Lewandowski and Co don’t even have a shot of progressing as a third-placed finisher, with their final game at least a chance to land a blow on one of Europe’s leading lights.
Group D: Netherlands vs Austria – 18.00
The Netherlands have top spot to cling on to as they go into their Group D finale against dangerous Austria on Tuesday at Euro 2024.
Ronald Koeman’s side have the edge over group favourites France on goals scored, thanks in part to their draw with Les Bleus in Leipzig last Friday.
But it could have been so much better had Xavi Simons’ goal not been controversially ruled out for an offside following a tortuous VAR check.
And they face a tricky opponent here in the form of Ralph Rangnick’s well drilled Austrians.
They pushed the French all the way in their opening match, with Max Wober’s own goal the only difference between the teams.
And they did the business against sorry Poland, too, as goals from Gernot Trauner, Christoph Baumgartner and a Marko Arnautovic penalty earned a 3-1 victory.
It means a shot at the Round of 16 lies before them, albeit they’ll likely need at least a point to be sure.
Group C: England vs Slovenia – 21.00
England finish their bid to top Group C at Euro 2024 on Tuesday when they go up against Slovenia in Cologne.
Given the national mood after their at times dismal draw with Denmark last Thursday, that might be easier said than done.
Such is the lot of a nation that has come into the tournament right among the favourites, despite iffy form this year and having not won a major competition since their home World Cup in 1966.
Captain Harry Kane had put the Three Lions ahead in Frankfurt with just 18 minutes played.
But it was the Danes that went on to have the better of the game, not least after Morten Hjulmand’s inch-perfect equalizer 16 minutes later.
Coach Gareth Southgate was left grateful for the three points picked up in their opening game with the Serbians, meaning they are all-but sure of a place in the knockouts in spite of the circling dark clouds.
The Slovenians could cause a headache, though, having picked up a pair of 1-1 draws so far.
They were seconds away from being level with their illustrious final opponents, too, when Zan Karnicnik’s 69th-minute opener was cancelled out via the last kick of the game by Serbia’s Luka Jovic.
Group C: Denmark vs Serbia – 21.00
The battle is on between Denmark and Serbia at Euro 2024 on Tuesday, as both attempt to make it out of a competitive Group C at the final opportunity.
It feels a little harsh on the Danes that they find themselves potentially still needing a win to progress, after they led the way for much of their second fixture with tournament favourites England.
Morten Hjulmand capped a fine performance with a 34th-minute equalizer at the Frankfurt Arena.
His side went on to force the Three Lions right on to the back foot, only to come up short in the final third to leave themselves sat on two points.
The boot had been on the other foot in their group opener, when Erik Janza pulled Slovenia level to cancel out Christian Eriksen’s fairytale deadlock-breaker.
Serbia have had their share of drama, too, not least as they saved their tournament with the last kick of their own Slovenian contest.
Luka Jovic was the hero with the final touch as they earned what had seemed an impossible point to keep themselves just about alive.
But only if they can do the business against Kasper Hjulmand and his charges, who are out to show they’re going into the Euros once again, with the 1992 champions having gone all the way to the semi-finals three years ago.
