Semi-final: Spain vs France – 21.00

The battle is on for a place in the Euro 2024 showpiece on Tuesday, as Spain and France meet in the first semi-final in Munich.

Both are former European Championship winners, with the most recent crown scooped up by the Spanish in 2012.

And they look a good bet to pick up their fourth crown after dumping out host nation Germany in the most dramatic fashion on Friday.

They were indebted to Mikel Merino’s 119th-minute winner that avoided a penalty shootout by seconds at the end of a thrilling match in Stuttgart.

Dani Olmo had earlier put the men in red into a second half lead, only for Florian Wirtz to equalize with just a minute of normal time left on the clock.

The only blemish was a red card for Dani Cravajal, whose rugby tackle on Jamal Musiala as he threatened to snatch a second astonishing leveler, meant a second yellow card from English referee Anthony Taylor.

It was equally tense for France on Friday night, who came through a nerve-shredding encounter with Portugal by virtue of a penalty shootout.

Theo Hernandez struck the decisive effort after Joao Felix struck the woodwork, ending the dream for Cristiano Ronaldo and Co.

That they have made it this far without the likes of Kylian Mbappe – broken nose and all – firing on all cylinders, could be ominous for their last four opponents.

It was just as tricky in their Round of 16 clash with another neighbour in Belgium, coaxing an 85th-minute own goal from the unfortunate Jan Vertonghen.

And their pool stage set the tone in Germany, with another own goal-inspired victory over Austria, goalless draw with the Netherlands and stalemate with Poland thanks to an Mbappe penalty dragging Les Bleus through to the knockouts.

Spain have enjoyed a much smoother tournament so far, despite a scare in their Round of 16 clash with minnows Georgia, who struck on the break to take the lead.

But goals from Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo ensured there would be no shock for Luis de la Fuente’s impressive side.

They had earlier eased their way through Group B, finishing top with three wins and a maximum, nine-point haul.

Victories over Croatia, Italy and Albania did the trick in a potentially devilish pool, leaving the Spanish looking in fine fettle coming into this penultimate hurdle.
