FIFA 21 has added new celebrations to the game ? including one notably familiar to South Africans. Ten years after the ?goal for all of Africa?, Siphiwe Tshabalala’s dance has been immortalised in the virtual world alongside other signature celebrations.
In case you’ve forgotten what we’re talking about (shame hey), here’s a reminder from the FIFA 21 celebration trailer.
Could they not at least use Tshabs to show off the moment himself? Anyway, we digress. The historic moment can be recreated in the virtual world with any player or any team.
Tshabalala provided one of the iconic moments of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, as the global soccer showpiece took place on African soil for the first time.
South Africa hosted the landmark tournament, kicking off Group A against Mexico in front of a packed Soccer City stadium in Soweto.
All had been quiet – apart from the vuvuzelas in the crowd – until Bafana Bafana star Tshabalala burst free down the left in the 54th minute and lashed his shot beyond the dive of Oscar Perez.
The noise was deafening, the atmosphere was wild, but Tshabalala had more in store.
His well-rehearsed ?Macarena? celebration is remembered as much as his goal, with the Kaizer Chiefs legend striding across to the right-hand corner of the field.
There he was joined by team-mates Katlego Mphela, Kagisho Dikgaco, Teko Modise and Reneilwe Letsholonyane for a piece of impeccable choreography.
While lesser performers would dive on the ground or jump into the crowd, the South Africans kept their heads for an immortal moment.
That the Central Americans equalized for a 1-1 draw and Bafana failed to progress from the group fades in the memory.
What remains is ?Shabba?, his ?goal for all of Africa? – and one very special celebration.
