Super Rugby by the numbers: Biggest defeats in the competition

The Sunwolves copped a hammering against the Reds on Saturday - but it's some way off being one of the worst defeats in the competition's history.

It?s tough being the Sunwolves in Super Rugby. They started their last hurrah in Super Rugby with a bang, beating the Rebels in their opening match of the 2020 season. But a heavy defeat at the hands of the Chiefs in their second game brought them right back down to earth.

On Saturday, they lost 64-5 against the Reds, although it looked like they wouldn?t even get any points on the board.

Believe it or not, though, that 59-point margin isn?t even close to some of the biggest hammerings dished out in the Super Rugby competition in the past. The ten tries the Reds scored was also some way off the record of 14, shared by the Crusaders (vs the Waratahs in 2002) and the Cheetahs (against the Sunwolves in 2016).

It?s probably not much solace if you?re a Sunwovles supporter, but here?s how the numbers stack up for some of Super Rugby?s biggest defeats.

The statistics include fixtures starting from the Super 12 era.

Super Rugby by the numbers: Biggest defeats

The Sunwolves have been at the other end of a hammering more than once, most recently against the Lions back in 2017, when they lost 94-7. But that wasn’t quite as bad as the hammering the Reds took when the Bulls beat them 92-3 in 2007. The Rebels also make the list thanks to the 66-0 loss against the Crusaders last season.

Unsurprisingly, this list includes a few of the teams on the previous list. The Crusaders hold the record from when they beat the Waratahs 96-19 in 2002. The now departed Kings also make the list, for conceding the most – not scoring them. That’s from the 2013 match against the Waratahs, who won 10-72.
