The popular life simulation game, The Sims, turned 20 years old this week.
Created by Will Wright, the best-selling PC franchise of all time has gone through quite a few changes over the years. Initially, it confused so-called “traditional” gamers, because you couldn’t really “win”.
Yet, somehow, controlling the lives and futures of virtual people – completely imagined or resembling somebody you might know – became a popular past-time for millions of people across the world.
The game developed its own language ? Simlish, a cult communication phenomenon where Simmers say ?sul, sul? and ?dag, dag?, amongst many other quirks.
The game has come a long way since the days of the Newbie family and the world where mirrors didn?t reflect.
To celebrate its two decades of existence, the team from The Sims have kicked off what they call a ?heck of a party?.
To get things started, a small patch update was released for PC and Mac on Tuesday, with a few minor bug fixes and a birthday hot tub, a sort of throwback to one that existed in the original Sims.
The team also released some quirky stats racked up by players across the years.
The Sims by the numbers over 20 years
- Four games, over 75 expansion packs.
- 1.6 billion Sims created and counting
- 6.9 million Vampires
- 1 million Mermaids

- 575 million Sim households
- 37 million weddings

While players are also anticipating that there will be an announcement relating to The Sims 5 soon, others are simply hoping for the 20-year celebrations to revive things like the vibrating heart bed or evening bringing back some families and characters from the OG game.
